Mandela Capture Monument

Midlands

On the 5th of August 1962 on the R103, about 5 km outside of Howick, Nelson Mandela was arrested. He had been avoiding capture by the Apartheid government for 17 months. At the time of arrest, he was pretending to be a chauffeur.

Today an internationally recognised sculpture can be found here. Consisting of 50 steel columns, the sculpture was designed and made by artists Marco Cianfanelli and Jeremy Rose.

The uMngeni municipality plan to build a museum, theatre, amphitheatre and arts and crafts centre here.
